Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby

You may not be a NASCAR fan or even care what kind of wheels go what kind of fast—but Will Ferrell has finally gotten back into the driver’s seat with a truly hilarious role. This movie, postulating Ferrell’s need for speed as the man with tow first names, is the kind of entertaining romp that need to be seen to be appreciated—and enjoyed. There are highs and lows, pathos and triumphs of the soul—nah, it’s just funny stuff, is all. The well-appointed cast helps to move it all along: from Gary Cole and Jayne Lynch, to Sacha Baron Cohen of Da Ali G fame, playing Euro-idiot Jean Girard.

There are plenty of “large” scenes to watch when racing takes over, and one can only imagine how lousy this would have looked back in the days of VHS. Fortunately, the DVD presentation is excellent (just tweak your contrast a bit, perhaps), and the audio’s surround effects a perfect complement for them. There’s also a Blu-ray version that adds a lot of detail to the view of the racing scenes. Does it make the film “better” for home viewing? No, but it does increase the enjoyment of the racing scenes.

There are tons of additions for after the film: DVD-ROM stuff, bonus racing footage, alternate lines, featurettes, a gag reel, and those deleted and extended scenes.

The unrated version adds 13 additional minutes, more deleted scenes, interviews, and “public service announcements” to show civic pride.
