Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2-Disc Special Edition)

Disney had the sense to green-light the Pirates sequel fairly quickly, and as a result all of the quirkiness and endearing qualities of the actors’ roles remain intact. That Pirates did so phenomenally well only shows that building upon successful characters is never a mistake; that Johnny Depp could enter the mainstream with one of his over-the-top characterizations (Captain Jack Sparrow) attests to this.

Now that it’s hip to be a Pirate (practice rolling your Rs), a home setup can really show off its stuff here: Make sure you’ve a subwoofer to really get the pounding in, and it’s time to finally calibrate that color for all the vividness found on this disc. There are no complaints with the quality of the video reproduction or the value of the surround sound. Fortunately, there aren’t any CG effects that fall apart in home viewing on DVD (any dark scene in a Harry Potter film comes to mind), and overall no viewer will point and complain. The speed at which the film moves helps to keep the mind from pondering these thins anyway….

The single-disc edition builds upon the expected with bloopers and audio commentaries, while the two-disc edition adds nifty holographic packaging, as well as featurettes and lots more (even a program on the newly beefed-up Pirates ride).
