Snakes on a Plane

Snakes on a Plane
Snakes on a Plane

It’s tough enough to deal with all the new flight restrictions that are getting put into place, but now there are snakes on the plane? Take this premise, chew it around, and then watch the actors chew it—and the scenery even more so. The result is an action-thriller that seems sheer lunacy, but somehow becomes entertaining—if ultimately only a mindless diversion that was helped along by a lot of Internet chatter. Let’s just jay that FBI agent Samuel Jackson has a lot more to do than just guard/transport a mob witness to LA. That the film has a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor only helps, as does the determination of the actor and his fellows to play this all straight. The result is a fun ride—provided you’re not watching this while flying.

“Ship in a bottle” films (with scenes primarily in cramped quarters) are made or broken by the lighting. The softness inherent in dark scenes in standard def is actually beneficial here. Audio needs to be very loud and heavy on the bass to work well, by the way.

Extras include TV spots and theatrical trailers, audio commentaries, deleted scenes, behind the scenes, and featurettes—including one about the blogging that generated a lot of online interest in the movie. It even includes a music video, so the couch-potato-watching MTV generation won’t fell left out.
