Steve Miller Band: Fly Like an Eagle 30th Anniversary Special Limited Edition
It’s the ’70s, and Steve Miller’s The Joker has gone Platinum. He retreats to his home and puts everything he’s got into a recording studio built there. The result is an album in 1975 whose songs continue to play today—not be-cause they’re legends, but because they’re just that good. You know which ones we’re talking about—there’s “Take the Money and Run,”“Rock ’N Me,” and more. And of course the title track, with that synthesizer that still belts out a psychedelic ribbon of audio color—and which Miller spent years fine-tuning.
The collectible package includes a remastered CD, as well as the DVD allowing for 5.1surround—remember Miller did this in (the late and lamented) quadraphonic, so the tracks were intended to be played from more than just those two stereo speakers. Of course, DVD also allows for other things, such as room for bonus and demo tracks, and even early versions of now-well-known tunes (“Fly Like an Eagle” being one of them)—as well as lots of video, where we get documentaries and inter-views, but also concert footage from a 2005 performance.
You can easily hear how the surround works to advantage on these songs: Since they were written with multichannel in mind, it’s not a matter of trying to force the music to be 5.1 so much as just “bending” it a bit to fit the space.Bass is generous, and the overall tone is clear and distinct.
