A Prairie Home Companion
A Prairie Home Companion

This film is gentler fare than most, and possibly was hurt theatrically because it cam out at the same time as some blockbuster action films. But nothing can stop the power of life and the personalities that this film brings out. That’s because it builds well on Garrison Keillor’s down-home, aw-shucks variety radio show. Aficionados will bypass the conceit of the show being cancelled and revel in the performances of Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin, KevinKline, and others—Robert Altman bringing his magic to an ensemble performance of song and heart. Even Lindsay Lohan works it well, as does Woody Harrelson. And to those unfamiliar with it all, just sit back and enjoy the show.

Altman’s style of film making suits home viewing well—provided you’ve a fair-sized screen. This is less an issue here, as wide vistas are not evident. It’s a crisp and clear presentation that has no artifacting or obvious problems.Sound is particularly well done, as befits what could be called a mini-musical of sorts: The added ambiance of the surround is less useful here as a visual aid, and more useful for enhancing and amplifying the music and singing.

Extras are also nicely appointed: an audio commentary featuring Altman is worth the disc alone, and adding Kline boosts it higher. Also found are deleted scenes with optional commentary (a recent addition to DVD’s box of tricks), a featurette, and extended music performances, as well as advertising segments.Plus, you’re able to jump to songs in the film.
