Memento Blu-ray

If you have a linear and orderly mind, this film will drive you nuts. That’s because the protagonist has a memory-loss problem that dumps his recollections as soon as they occur (with memories from before the accident remaining unaffected). So is he on the trail to finding his wife’s killer, or something else? Where does it start or end? Nothing is what it seems—and what is seen, is not what one thinks it is.

Considering that the character has writing all over his body and that notes and pictures are integral to the story, being able to see these in exquisite detail is a necessity—one that a standard DVD just can’t handle, but this BD disc can. Additionally, the sharp contrast inherent in the black-and-white scenes is aided by the higher resolution of the image: It’s not just color that benefits. The quality of this disc is evident in its viewing, and compared to the standard-definition version, it’s a whole new view.

Audio is less a technical achievement, as its job here is to provide for background. Of course, dialogue is crystal clear (a necessity), and surround does its thing on occasion, but it’s miniscule compared to the superlative visuals that are now possible to see. Those not wanting to go the PCM route will be just as comfortable with standard Dolby Surround.

Extras are scant and in SD. They include a director’s commentary, along with an “Anatomy of a Scene” featurette.
