The Little Mermaid 2-Disc Special Edition Platinum Edition
Where do we start...that it is the last, great, hand-animated film from Disney in the minds of many purists—or that it embodies everything that Walt envisioned in creating an animation that entertains with heart, humor, and style? Or that the re-imaging of the classic fable begat a classic of its own?
How about yes to all of the above? It has been remastered to boot, so it looks as good as it can for the home theater, and while the sound has also been crafted with care—nothing short of high-definition could top this release. Color and contrast are right where they should be, and a slight tweaking for one’s personal taste will only add improvement. Of course, the music is marvelous and Ariel knows how to belt out a song—even while underwater! Filled with colorful characters (we’re big fans of Buddy Hackett’s turn as the squawking seagull, Scuttle)and short on mendacity and predictability, it’s a fun ride even for those who don’t like getting wet! The new 5.1 audio mix pounds the rocks with waves of audio delight—and enhances all, both below and above the water.
Bonus features are “drawn” in great abundance. It’s like visiting the familiar house of an old friend, then going into a room you’ve never entered only to find everything pleasant and delightful. Start with a new music video and a making-of featurette that reunites the original cast, then add deleted scenes and games and activities and commentaries....you get the idea.
