 The Jayne Mansfield Collection
While the label of “Blonde Bombshell”would only raise an eyebrow today, this was a coveted title for any would-be starlet seeking fame and fortune in Hollywood. Probably the best known to hold this title was Jayne Mansfield, who conveyed a sensuality that was more raw and less inviting than that of Marilyn Monroe. Her untimely death may have stopped her career, but as the years have progressed, it also seems to have taken her films into limbo.
This box set could help to shine her star once more. Titles include The Girl Can’t Help It; The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw; and fortunately, the classic Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? These are all of a comedic bent that—while short of plot and character development, to be sure—were produced so that Jayne looked her best. This comes through on DVD as well, and makes for pleasant eye-candy if nothing else; it’s a fun way to while away more than an hour as the mores of the time assault your senses. Audio isn’t about special effects or music swelling to a crescendo; it’s about enabling the dialogue to be heard, and that’s all it’s expected to do—and it does. But at least you get stereo for listening to a very young Little Richard!
Nostalgia dictates some good bonuses: you won’t be disappointed as there are actor commentaries, trailers and featurettes, and in theatre presentations like the Movie tone News.
