 James Stewart-The Signature Collection
The real advantage of movies is that you can easily see why certain actors deserve their reputations. James Stewart is a sterling example of a true movie legend—a man whose integrity and innate ability to connect with the common man was aided by an acting style, which always comes across as effortless. These six Stewart films (all new to DVD) portray aspects of his personality—from hard-headed to strong, to a leader among men—and range from The FBI Story to The Spirit of St. Louis, the baseball-themed The Stratton Story, and then his Western side as displayed by The Cheyenne Social Club; Firecreek; and The Naked Spur.
Technicolor can come across a bit odd—or should we say, not quite right to our eyes—when viewed at home, but Warner’s experience with classic titles keeps that from happening. True, the films do show their age a bit, but they are certainly viewable. Audio’s purpose is primarily to ensure hearing the dialogue, but some ambience is added with The Spirit of St. Louis’ being in multichannel surround.
Warner has opened their vaults to provide a real look at the times, adding value to this boxset. Besides expert commentaries and movie reels from the times, you also get vintage shorts and even some classic cartoons.
