 A Fish Called Wanda-Collector’s Edition
There’s a lot to like about this movie. Start with an early and maniacally hilarious appearance by Kevin Kline and Monty Python’s John Cleese (who also wrote it) at his insufferable best; an incredibly simple, yet complex and humorous plot; and the joy of watching and laughing out loud at the inanities that result. Add Jamie Lee Curtis and Michael Palin, and you can see it couldn’t miss. And of course, there’s “Wanda” and how the title relates to it all in this jewel-heist that makes The Pink Panther look serious. We’re not kidding.
The film shows its age a bit, but it is still quite watchable—contrast and colors are fine, and the need to tweak the display a bit to bring out the best here is no big deal.
The surorund effects are minimal because it’s really all about dialogue and frantic action.
Bonuses add worth that extends past viewing the film. We only wish there were three discs for all the goodies now included that highlight Cleese—from audio commentaries on the film to a special greeting by him to the viewer, plus a lot more. “More” is 30 minutes of deleted footage and alternate scenes, a trivia track, hidden Easter Eggs, photo galleries, documentaries, and featurettes. For a John Cleese fan, this is heaven—and woe to the Sony producers should they put this out in HD in the future and leave out any of this.
