 Supernatural-The Complete First Season
Ever since the X-Files, viewers have hoped for another show that could mix the terrifying with likeable characters. While some might find it off-putting that the protagonists are in their early to mid 20s (a WB show prerequisite), in Supernatural you get the humor amidst the horror—as these two brothers go on one very long road trip in pursuit of the evil that destroyed their mother. This road trip has them encountering inexplicable phenomena along the way in a serialized format we can now enjoy, thanks to the presentation on DVD disc.
Colors tend to come across a bit more ruddy than normal, and with a tweaked contrast. This adds to the otherworldly aspect of the show, as it’s just enough to be noticeable.Images are quite a bit crisper than the non-HD broadcast and have more visible detail in the darker scenes, of which there are many. Overall sound quality is good, but the lack of surround is a shame, although Dolby ProLogic can enhance the stereo provided.
Bonus additions are quite large and offer a deeper look into the show’s mythology, as well as just being entertaining: DVD-ROM features allow for a sneak peek into Season 2 and the pilot script, among other things, while the conventional on-disc includes new featurettes, a back-story on the two brothers, a gag reel, photo galleries, director’s audio commentary, and unaired scenes.
